Beach Cleanup: CORUM Adopts a National Coastline to Expand Its Beach Cleanup Events

In order to expand the impact and raise the awareness about marine pollution, this year Corum officially adopts a national coastline, Zhongjiao Bay Beach in jinshan district of new Taipei city in Taiwan’s northern coast, to encourage more staffs, their families and friends to help remove garbage and plastic in the ocean. Becoming an adopter is a practice to declare the company’s determination in ocean protection and waste reduction, for the frequency of coastal cleanup events will be required twice a year at least and reviewed annually.

Not only thousands of marine animals have been affected by plastic pollution in ocean that we learned from media, but beach sand areas have been destroyed and covered by lots of waste, such as plastic/glass bottle waste, polyfoam fragments, fishing nets, ropes, and even infectious waste needles we found in cleanup this time. During the cleanup activity, one of our colleagues said, “My original cognition to beach cleanup event was merely to pick up waste on beach, but this time when I saw a lot of things that do not belong to the ocean appearing on the beach, it makes me deeply realize the garbage we made day by day unintentionally has seriously caused damage to the marine environments. I cannot image how bad injures would happen if kids took off shoes and played barefoot along the beach.”

Indeed, except encouraging more beach cleanup events, the most crucial thing is to think about how to reduce our daily garbage. By adopting a coastline, Corum would like to appeal more people to join the cleanups and learn from it, as we see beach cleanups are important mitigation tools that can help create an understanding of the marine pollution problem and encourage people to engage in solutions.
